Review of American Psycho (2000) by Paul J — 15 Sep 2012
They do a great job capturing the feel of the 80's. Especially amongst the hedonistic self-absorbed upper-class. Bale gives a fully committed performance and the POV of the film is fascinating. We're left wondering how much of it is real but it opens up many possibilities.
The concept and character are actually brilliantly portrayed. But the style and satirical approach eventually becomes a little bit contrived. It has a similar structure to Fincher's The Game. A more convincing example of this "Psycho" is in Mike Leigh's Naked.
Still, this movie does have its moments. In some respects, Bateman has a similar dilemma as the main character in the recent Shame.
