The cult-level fascination with this film led me to have rather high expectations for this film, back when Reese Witherspoon was not yet legally blonde and Christian Bale was without an Oscar or a Batsuit.

Bale shines in this role, as he does in each of his roles. He lives and breathes Patrick Bateman and draws us in with his smooth talk in between gore and narcissism. However, the film left me emotionless, much like the film's protagonist. I could not decide if I would remain indifferent to the cycle of egos and murders, or if I wanted him to be caught in the end.

Not having read Bret Easton Ellis's source material, I cannot speak to how loyal this movie plays out to the novel. But I can say that the film, while well executed, does little more than leave the audience numb and apathetic at film's end. Perhaps if I had lived during the 80s the film would have resonated more with me.
