Review of American Psycho (2000) by Hannah D — 18 May 2015
This movie is half dark satire and half straight horror. Havard-educated straight old-money WASP Bateman as a serial killer compares unchecked privilege with sociopathy. "It is impossible to empathize" (Bateman's interpretation of Whitney Houston lyrics). And of course, such is affluenza that there are no penalties and no meaning, just appearances and materialism.
One thought is that Bateman is so extreme that I don't know if it can really speak to the more everyday reality of privilege. I think it does though.
