Review of American Psycho (2000) by Jacob P — 12 Mar 2014
Batemen lives in a world of ego driven idiots who cannot see what a psychopath he is because they are blinded by their own stupid material worlds of greed, possession, and.
Wealth. The film has an extremely dark, satirical humor to it, but does not even come close to the level of violence that is in the novel. Maybe that is a good thing! There are just some things that are better read than visualized, and the book is beyond ultra.
Violent! That being said, I think the film captures the spirit of the book quite well, with a truly amazing performance from Christian Bale. He is so psychotic and fake in this that it is mind boggling! There are moments when the camera looks directly into his eyes and there is simply nothing there, it is like being sucked into a cold vacuum! He is also completely narcissistic, focused only on his outer appearance because there is nothing inside. It is a brilliant and eye opening film about consumerism taken to its most.
Extreme level, where even people become objects for pleasure and nobody sees each other for what they truly are.
