Review of American Pimp (2000) by Kinohi N — 26 Nov 2008
Hm, not sure why some people are dismissing this film out of hand. It's as though any encounter with unseemly subjects is reason enough not to like a film (and a documentary, to boot!). The genius of American Pimp is precisely that the Hughes Brothers let pimps rattle on about "The Game," however brutal or unfeeling some of their comments may be.
The reality of their underground business is a shock to the system, but the film is by no means a "celebration" of that world. American Pimp is a film of subculture ethnography: you're not supposed to "like" the characters as try to understand their complex motivations for doing what they do.
