Review of American Pie Presents: Beta House (2007) by Timothy S — 12 Jan 2012
Much like all of those "National Lampoon" features, "Beta House" is presented by the "American Pie" movies, but it only bears a passing resemblance to those films. Two of the characters bear the name "Stifler", and Eugene Levy pops up for a few minutes to tie this to the wildly popular franchise, but this is still nothing more than an unwanted stepchild. I wasn't a big fan of the original trilogy, but even I think it's sad it's come to this.
The plot is the reliable "let's do wacky things to get into the frat house" standby, and there's absolutely nothing to recommend here. It's simple, lazy and filled with bland, unmemorable characters. The writers are solely concerned with embarrassing its characters and thinking that it passes for nostalgia. If anyone experienced any of these situations during their college years, I doubt they look back on them fondly.
There are a boatload of amazingly beautiful females, many of them in various stages of undress, but none of them get to be anything more than just a pretty face. But this film isn't about the women. They're just eye candy, but they're also not enough of a reason to sit through this atrocious picture. Unfortunately, people will always find this type of film to be funny, so there will always be an audience for them. And if there's always going to be people who laugh at dreck like this, there will never be a reason to try to make them better than this.
"Beta House" is about as bad as it gets. This would have felt right at home in 1982.
