Review of American Pie 2 (2001) by Kevin D — 22 Jun 2010
I would like to note that this is not my first time seeing this movie. I saw it twice in its entirety years ago and I've caught bits and pieces on tv every here and then, but this is my first time (saying "first time" while reviewing an American Pie movie just seems funny to me for some reason) watching it from a critical standpoint.
And let me tell you, it was hard (why do I keep writing sexual innuendos while reviewing this movie?). It was difficult reviewing this movie because I remembered a few of the gags so I knew what was coming (I really need to stop with these double-entrendes.
). The good news is that the familiar gags still made me laugh and the gags that I forgot made me laugh even harder. I have a long (I think I might just type some ellipsis dots or just type "sigh" when I write these sexually suggestive words) history with this movie.
I watched it for the first time back in 4th grade. In a span of two days I watched it twice: once with my sister and once with the entire family (this had to be one of the most uncomfortable movies to watch with my family, but at least we made it through the entire movie because my family thought it was so funny.
Some other uncomfortable family movie nights include "O", "National Lampoon's Van Wilder", "Super Troopers", and "Scary Movie" among several others. Keep in mind that all of these viewings took place around 3rd and 4th grade.
). I distinctly remember bragging that American Pie 2 was my favorite movie back in 4th grade. Yup, I felt so cool for watching this unrated sex comedy as a young kid. I should have felt cooler for having a great taste in movies at a young age, because this is a very funny and enjoyable movie.
It's quite clear that most of the gags in this movie are based off of the gags in the first American Pie, but I can't really complain when the gags in this movie are as hilarious and clever as they are.
The entire gang of lovable characters are back and they sure are a joy to watch. Most people would say that Stifler is their favorite character in the series, but my favorite would have to be Finch. He's such a cool and completely "out-there" character.
Like the first movie, this one flies by real quickly. I know I've already said this a million times, but this movie is an absolute joy to watch. The entire cast is great, especially Eugen Levy, who shines once again as Jim's oddball father.
To make things even better, this movie is quite heart-warming and it actually has a message (yet it somewhat contradicts itself near the end with the message it appears to be giving out. However, this is a teen sex comedy, so who really cares what the message was?) So in conclusion, this is a legitimately laugh out loud movie that is entertaining and offers a nice message.
But let's be honest here: most people see this movie for a particular scene that takes place at a beach house while the guys are painting. The people who watch this movie simply for that scene are in for an additional treat because that scene also happens to be the funniest in the movie.
