Review of American Pastoral (2016) by Kellan R — 15 Apr 2018
Nothing like Roth's novel. McGregor gives a self-indulgent performance that lacks the depth and truth of the true Swede in the novel, hence Swede, blonde, beautiful, a Jew, an American patriot; nothing of this character is present in his performance.
Jennifer Connelly who has done strong work in the past has a huge misfire in this one, poor script enmeshed with severe over acting and full of clichès.
The direction is very basic and reminiscent of something shot in a film school thesis, very amateurish and the script just does not honor the novel, the first chapter of the book does not even exist in this film. Read the book and stay away from this embarrassement, which diminishes the legacy of the novel.
