Review of American Outlaws (2001) by Jim M — 27 Jun 2010
Half-assed retelling of the story of Jesse James with a bunch of pretty boys. Still, if you don't expect too much its not a bad way to kill 90 minutes. Though in all honesty Young Gun 1&2 are much more entertaining, and The Long Riders is a better take on Jesse James.
UPDATE.
Hmmm 2 things occure to me. The Indian Comanche Tom is probably the most interesting of the gang so of course we rarely see him. 2) Playing up the pretty boy Robin Hood angle of Jesse James, a man who was a bandit and Confederate hold out (the movie mentions he rode with William Quantrell. Jesse James did ride with Quantrills Raiders, and took part in the massacre at Lawrence, Kansas) is analgous to making a hero out of a Nazi SS holdout in Germany circa 1945.
