Review of American Movie (1999) by Juan C — 04 Jun 2011
A film that takes delight in laughing at white trash. It borders on exploitation with a stream of consciousness narrative. Do I really want to invest in a character that is borderline psychotic? To keep a soft tone it never really confronts the characters with their flaws.
Not that a narrative is needed to force those points down heavy handedly. I think there is a better film in there if constructed differently. The scenes doubling back to their childhood adventures seemed quite nostalgic and a little sad. The framing the uncles death also seemed at odds with the tone of the film.
