Review of American Movie (1999) by Chris M — 06 Oct 2010
A great documentary about the trials and tribulations of filmmaking.
Mark Borchardt is man from Wisconsin who, since the age of 8, has always wanted to make movies. But filmmaking is an extremely difficult line of work and takes a lot of time, money, and a lot of sacrifices. This film tracks his progress in making Mark's own movie, "Coven" (which is pronounced Co-ven, not coven because that sounds too much like "oven", man).
"American Movie" is a movie that mixes comedy, drama, sadness, and reality all into one documentary. These are real people going through real struggles. Mark is at the center of all this and keeps trudging along in trying to make his film. It gives you some hope, too. If you have a dream and are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to reach it, then go for it, man.
