Review of American Movie (1999) by Gabriel K — 22 Dec 2010
Wannabe film-maker Mark Borchadt will stop at nothing to realize his dreams of hollywood paying him mega bucks for his talents. Even if he is so hopelessly inept at everything (not just making films) he has to borrow money from everybody he knows (including his dying uncle) to fund them/live/drink beer. His insistence that he is better than all those "motherfuckers in the factory" never wains, he has a goal and he will reach it, no matter the cost (to others). At times this is hard to watch and at times his enthusiasm is almost as amusing as it is depressing. That is until you see the results of this 3+ year venture and realize it was all a waste of time, his film sucks and endless shots of winter trees do not a horror film make. It's a shame Borchardt won't ever see that though and is no doubt selling the internal organs of his relatives right now in order to fund another slice of grainy horrific (in an unintentional manner) pap.
Oh well, I guess he gives us all hope in a way, although I'm not sure what way.
