Review of American Mary (2013) by The D — 18 Apr 2013
This was always going to be a strange tale, but it's approached with a certain whimsy that prevents it from being just a schlocky take on the underground world of body modifications and surgery.
The story picks up with our Mary(Isabelle) becoming frustrated with life at medical school and suffering the financial problems so much so that she answers an ad believing to earn some money stripping at a downtown club. Having handed over her resume she is immediately thrust into some makeshift surgery in a back room. At this point this was only the interview!
As word of her work travels and one particular brutal evening suffered Mary sinks deeper into this dark yet eccentric world.
The film stops short of being gross out horror but it's still quite painful to the senses. This it's lightened by some really quirky characters. Yes it's laced with poor acting but it seems right at home in this world.
The only downfall is that then conclusion is a little bumblesome rather than climatic, it's also not entirely clear who is involeved in the final sequence.
Still it's somehing very different and for that it holds the focus and keeps you interested.
