Review of American Made (2017) by Calvin C — 01 Oct 2017
This true story is about Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who becomes a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel in the 1980s and later as an informant for the CIA. No matter what you think of Tom Cruise, he is one of the best actors of our time. This is one of his best performances since Magnolia. The entire movie is all him. He is charming, cocky, funny, and smart. He root for him even though you know what he is doing is not really a good thing. Director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) gives the film some pop with real news clips, 80s music, and a retro feel to the film. It was fascinating to see how this one man influenced world events. This is one of Cruises best work and totally makes up for The Mummy earlier this year. The character he plays was larger than life and the film feels that way.
GRADE: A-.
