Review of American Made (2017) by Winston B — 07 Oct 2017
American Made is a triumphant return for Tom Cruise in a not-stupid action flick, and I absolutely loved it! It's stylish and fun and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Its late 70's - early 80's period fits the film perfectly, and it never hits you over the head with the period like other movies are prone to do.
American Made is also filmed interestingly with a lot of close-ups and quick zooms, which work together to make the movie have an interesting feel. The movie also seems to have a purposefully low resolution, which makes the image less crisp and clear, to fit in with the time period and real-life footage it implements.
Probably American Made's biggest accomplishment is making the audience care about its rather immoral protagonist, who manages to get himself into increasingly worse situations over-and-over again.
Nevertheless, there is never a point when you don't want to see Tom Cruise as Barry Seal succeed in his exploits. I had a blast with American Made. I think its one of my favorite Tom Cruise movies to date, and I personally think Tom Cruise is one of the best action stars we've ever had.
American Made takes a crazy real story and turns it into a crazy movie with great acting, multiple surprises, and a truly awesome soundtrack.
