Review of American Hustle (2013) by Trentyn P — 11 Feb 2015
A film teeming with excellent acting, driven by a focused plot, and powered by a brilliant script, American Hustle should be experienced by all.
The characters in this movie are all gray, and while that can be frustrating, it's part of the fun. It becomes a guessing game for viewers as to where each person's loyalties lie.
While long stretches of screen time are devoted to seemingly nothing at all, the plot lays itself out beautifully in the quietly explosive final act.
Bale, Adams, Cooper, Lawrence and Renner are all at the top of their games and it really adds to the impressive depth of the characters.
The music sets tone excellently for what otherwise feels like very impersonal storytelling throughout the film. Make no mistake, none of the main players are good people, and there really aren't defined pro or antagonists.
Still, watching it all play out from start to finish, the payoff is immensely satisfying and well worth a watch by anyone who appreciates a good, smart story.
