Review of American Hustle (2013) by Akshita J — 02 May 2015
The film is about how two cons- Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his lover Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams)- are forced to work for the FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), who is in a wild chase to implicate every Congressman for corruption. To make this venery successful, Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), a favorable politician gets caught up in the mess. And to end it- Irving's wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) adds on to the chaos with her irrationally impulsive behavior.
Every character in this film was defined in a very raw manner which surprisingly made this movie enjoyable and engaging. Though Amy Adams is an amazing actor with a number of credentials to her name, I personally felt that she's too sweet to play someone so rugged and raw. Apart from her, it was a pleasure to see all noteworthy actors teaming up- Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale (imagine the heartache when I saw him-he was FAT!?!) and Jeremy Renner. Robert De Nero's special appearance was an icing on the cake- his shocking fluency in Arabic brought out a bag full of laughter.
I must say that this film surprised me a little because of its unexpected humor. There were so many situations where instead of feeling sorry for the characters, you just end up laughing (or maybe that was just me!).
What impressed me the most was the screenplay by Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell.
They captured the aura of the late 70's-early 80's pretty alluringly. The background score too made the presence of that period very evident with songs by Santana, Elton John and the likes capturing every movement.
The cinematography wasn't as such praiseworthy but it achieved what it wanted to i.e. capturing the film without excluding any detail. The hairstylists did a fantastic job! - Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adam's hair were a reminder of the bold hairstyles of the 80's. (I don't usually pay much attention to such details... but hairstyle's are hard to miss in this film-especially Christian Bale's- basically 'cause he's bald!).
To end- I wouldn't see any reason why this film shouldn't attract kudos to its name!
