Review of American Honey (2016) by Matthew L — 28 Mar 2018
American Honey is such a singular masterpiece that's its hard to describe without actually seeing it. It is, to date, my favorite movie of all time by a fair margin. The camera work and incessant change in focus give it a youthful fresh feel that perfectly suits its plot.
The movie, while expansive and beautiful, will prove challenging for a lot of viewers. It is very much a no nonsense depiction of life as a millennial teenager from a broken home. With that comes a lot of raw, sometimes graphic content that could drive the more conservative viewer away.
If you are willing to bear it's authenticity, you will come away with a soundtrack that embeds in your brain and a greater understanding of a life you would otherwise have never understood. The most enriching experience ever.
Additionally, I have now seen the movie 9 times, and each of the times has brought the same swell of emotion as the last. It's final moments soar. Acting, direction, cinematography and writing are perfectly true to the story.
I literally can't say enough about a movie so utterly captivating, but I'll let you discover it yourself.
