Review of American Honey (2016) by Tim M — 24 Oct 2016
A beautifully shot feature, 'American Honey' falls short of masterpiece status due to writer/director Andrea Arnold's inability to trim the fat from the edges. Despite being overindulgent, with such an array of characters Arnold does a good enough job explaining where each come from, but we don't learn a lot about the supporting cast. Some can only take so much shaky cam and that in large part was the most annoying aspect of this one.
The movie felt real. Some of the characters who have a line or two are authentic and genuine. This was so excellently cast, the dynamic between Sasha Lane and Shia LaBeouf make this special. Both deserve award consideration in a fair world. Lane in a bona fide star. This is her first film and no chance will be her last. This is the kind of movie that should have you thinking long after you watch.
