Review of American History X (1998) by Jillian L — 13 Jun 2013
This is another one of the ones that is always highly recommended and I finally gave it a shot, and I'm glad I did. This is an extremely interesting movie that definitely pushes the envelope. Honestly, the reason this movie really works is Edward Norton.
This is definitely one of his best performances. He handles all of the character shifts effortlessly, and the difference between the person he is in the flashbacks versus who he is during the action of the movie.
Edward Furlong also does a good job as the little brother. It is quickly paced and leads to an unexpected, shocking finish. This movie can be difficult to watch and definitely deals with some controversial topics, but it's an interesting study on how parents, mentors, older siblings, etc.
can influence those that idolize them, whether it be for good or bad.
