Review of American History X (1998) by Theodore H — 09 Dec 2013
The problem is rare today - narrative prowess expressed with technical ineptitude; it's usually the other way around (i.e., Thor, The Hobbit, Hemlock Grove, countless romantic comedies, countless animated films, etc.)...
One technical ineptitude of which I speak is the omnipresent, unfitting underscore. The composer was a little to un-insightful. Another is the never-followed rule of thirds. I'm a lover of breaking rules for a purpose, but it just made me feel uneasy and not in the right way. It was awkward and hard to focus and ultimately annoying.
The famous rape scene was so effective; I felt, no joke, like I was being raped.
