Review of American History X (1998) by David B — 14 Mar 2015
American History X is a very compelling and great movie. But truth be told it's not as good as it could have been. That's not to say that American History X is bad, but it's not as good as another similar movie that actually came out about four years after this one.
It's called "The Believer". If you want go check it out it's probably still on Netflix. But I felt as though for some reason this was not as good as the believer for the following reason: I felt as though Edward Nortons character was not as explored as I would have liked him to be.
I mean they explored a lot about him, but it wasn't enough if you ask me. I think that this was more because the story was just a bunch of flashbacks that occurred over the course of a day and a night.
And I guess for some reason the movie felt way too short for that reason. Other than that I quite enjoyed this movie. This movie has a lot of great moments to it and the movie did it's main job: get me to hate the crappy version of the nazis that we have here in america.
I felt almost as if this movie was trying to get me to hate those people. And I hated them for a lot of the movie because of the reasons that the nazis in this movie hated everyone. And they hated for unreasonable, mis-informed and just stupid reasons.
And that's the reason that most people hate nazis. But then I realized as the movie was over that maybe I'm not supposed to hate these people. Because hatred is a manifestation of anger. And that hatred lead to people being killed.
And not just people who had done bad things, but also the people who wanted to make themselves better. If you're into stories of American Neo-Nazis then don't hesitate to watch this. I out it off for far too long.
Even though it's not the best it turned out great in the end. And both Edwards were fantastic.
