Review of American Grindhouse (2011) by Thomas G — 19 Jul 2011
This review will be shorter than most others, simply for the fact that I am reviewing a documentary with not-so-much thought to explain it.
American Grindhouse is a documentary about the history and growth of exploitation films in America, and how there was a decrease in demand for them. But what is odd about this documentary id that it seems more like a documentary about sex in films particularly, at least for the majority of the film. It does explain the different forms of exploitatio films such as sexploitation, blaxploitation, and classic exploitation which included many cult films. But for a good majority of it, the film explain the increase in demand for sex in films, expecially during the 60's. It is not until the second half of the film in which they do explore the subjects of gore and violence in exploitation films.
So, I'm not quite sure if this is meant to speak of cheap, gory, horror Grindhouse films particularly, but it is an eye opener to exploitation used in films, whether it be sex, violence, blood, or even (as mentioned in one of the films featured) Nazis hunting Jesus in an urban setting. It is decently interesting, and it is worth watching.
