50s America always looks like a fun place in which to be a teenager. My inner fanboy also noticed parallels between the characters here and elements of Luke Skywalker in Episode IV - desperation for escaping the environment in which you were raised, feeling you were meant for more... Certainly there are similarities.
Anyway... Lots of great rock and roll music in American Graffiti, too. A love letter to a moment in time, etc.
