Review of American Gigolo (1980) by Paul T — 26 Dec 2008
Watchable primarily for the gorgeous Richard Gere and the nearly as gorgeous Lauren Hutton, American Gigolo is a very strange little morality tale which does manage to draw you in despite it's cold heart.
Unfortunately the passion between the two leads never ignites - which seems to be more a problem of script and cinematography than chemistry - and the murderous sub-plot is initially rather haphazardly edited into the proceedings, then just as things beging to gel, the film ends with a collection of blackout scenes which seem clumsily tacked on.
As with most of Schraders works though, the film definitely has its rewards... including Giorgio Morder's pulsating score.
