Review of American Gigolo (1980) by Jenny — 15 Jun 2008
Great camera work, acting and a decent plot. Schrader's "trilogy" which includes Taxi Driver (writer), American Gigolo (dir.) and Light Sleeper (dir.) does not reach greatness outside of the first installment, but is worth viewing in its entirety.
Especially notable is how Gigolo makes the transition from ultra-modern to perfect late-70s/early 80s period piece. From now-vintage Armani suits to full-size Warriors and Police posters, this is perhaps some of the best documentation of a bygone era you will ever see.
And, really, if anyone ever pulled off a serious take on a male prostitute, this is it.
