Review of American Gangster (2007) by Trystan C — 23 Jul 2012
This movie, much like "3:10 To Yuma" has one of my favourite actors facing off against Russel Crowe, also one of my favourite actors. The only difference is instead of the Wild West, it takes place in Harlem, and instead of Christian Bale, it is Mr. Denzel Washington.
So with Denzel Washington doing what he does best, being impossibly commanding and coolly terrifying, and Russel Crowe playing a sleazy cop, is this the new classic gangster film?
No. For one, it does not deal with gang politics, much like "Goodfellas" or "The Godfather," and two, as good as this movie is, there were no moments I felt truly blown away, which I believe is almost a requisite in a genre where people frequently are.
All in all, this movie's solid. And if you love Denzel Washington as much as I do, this is a must-see.
