Review of American Gangster (2007) by Jeffrey G — 13 Aug 2012
A good film, but not a great one. It's a bit overlong and strangely feels as if the two title roles are underwritten. A few moments of savagery by Denzel do wonders for the film, but I still wonder: why does this movie feel so underwhelming? Maybe because it feels as if it's two films that merge at the end into some lame quasi-cop buddy film? I appreciate the economics lesson, but I'd rather have seen a character-driven cop/gangster film.
It is, not surprisingly, remarkably well made, but ultimately, to me--unsatisfying.
