Review of American Gangster (2007) by Peter N — 29 Aug 2012
Ridley Scott delivers a dynamite gangster film, providing a unique take on the genre while retaining an atmosphere reminiscent of such crime classics as The Godfather and The French Connection. While not quite as stellar as the aforementioned films, American Gangster is a modern epic in its own right.
Denzel Washington further cements his status as one of the most versatile actors in history. His performance is uncharacteristically dark, making his interpretation of drug kingpin Frank Lucas one of the most evil characters in recent film history.
The story weaves a complicated and intriguing tapestry of lies, deception, and the pursuit of justice. The viewer is catapulted into the front lines of the 70's drug wars through the portrayal of brutal violence and sickening corruption in New York City, Bangkok, and other trafficking hot spots of the era.
The film is overly long due to its somewhat anticlimactic ending, but it more than makes up for it with stellar performances, stylish editing, and undeniable class.
