Review of American Gangster (2007) by Nick P — 12 May 2012
An exciting account of heroin trading and police corruption during the late Vietnam years. Based on real life events, the story focuses on both drug king pin, Frank Lucas, (Denzel Washington) and his rise to power as well as New Jersey detective, Ritchie Roberts (Russell Crowe) and his efforts to uncover those involved in New York's drug trade.
Director Ridley Scott has helped create a gritty 1970's thriller that pays tribute to gangster films like Black Caesar and The Godfather but with a new twist where honesty, conscientiousness and dedication to due process ultimately prevail.
Dazzling acting by Crowe and Washington together with near perfect directing from Scott make this one of the best organized crime thrillers to come around in a quite awhile.
