Review of American Dreamz (2006) by Rachel H — 13 Oct 2007
After reading mostly poor reviews for this film, I wasn't really expecting much. I was, thankfully, pleasantly surprised. A satirical look at America, its obsession with reality tv, and even its political state, "American Dreamz takes swipes at everything.
'American Dreamz', a spot-on parody of American Idol, is an hilarious case of American cheese and excess. the songs the contestants sing are particularly cringe-worthy. Hugh Grant is excellent as the heartless bastard host of the show, clearly loving the opportunity to subvert the usual character he plays.
Mandy Moore is also excellent as the bitch who will do anything for fame. The supporting parts are all filled out memorably by Willem Defoe as the vice-president, Dennis quaid as the Bush-like President, and Chris Klein playing the kind of lovable loser hes made a career out of.
The movie isnt without its flaws. It gets condensed down in too many sub-plots, and it sometimes feels a little smug. But this shortcoming aside, this is an entertaining, funny film. well worth a look.
