Review of American Beauty (1999) by Tomass P — 03 Oct 2012
Well, this is possibly THE film that should appeal to just about everyone. Well, a lot of people consider it overrated, and I do understand where they come from. The true masteries that come from the film aren't consistent and are very randomly placed. But, on it's bare surface is a very atmospheric film, that is emphasized by Kevin Spacey's perfect (literally perfect) representation as Lester Burnham. I would put this in the category of mainstream modern cinema, but I would call it the greatest it's category. Though, all the things I hate about modern cinema are present in this film. It's hard to explain, but it's certainly a film that could start a journey to get into cinema. Considering it wuld be a perfect transition from mainstream shit movies, to the modern genius film (Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, Coen Brothers, Pedro Almodovar), then to the true world cinema.
Anyway, it's a great film thats very humane for it's level of intelligence. Great camera work, stunning performances, VERY big laughs, and an atmosphere that contains it's great content.
