Review of American Beauty (1999) by Jake R — 17 Mar 2013
A lot of people has interpreted this film as a man thinking about the meaning of life or a showing of how meaningless life in American suburbs has become. I do not think either of those interpretations do the film justice; it's about beauty and knowing how to appreciate it.
The realizations many of the characters come to realize are not so much about what gives or deprives life of meaning, but what we can understand about beauty in the world and how such an understanding affects our outlook on life.
Also, the movie is pretty damn funny.
