Review of American Beauty (1999) by Kelsey Z — 22 May 2013
All around just a beautiful film. The characters and wonderful acting really shaped it well. Lester is one of the most diverse characters. He has nearly lost all life within himself. When he takes a liking to his daughters friend, Angela, the youth deep down inside of him is unleashed.
His sarcastic new found joy finally has him calling his own shots. This really points out everything we have to put up with and how ludicrous it all is. Angela is a very promiscuous girl and sex is the only way she can attempt to stand out.
She has a deep fear of being ordinary, which is something that everyone deals with on some level; trying to find what defines you and sets you apart from others. Jane is in this stage to, but is really lost until she finds Ricky.
He has a very artistic side, finding his own vision of life even in the most mundane things. Together they try to take control over things, much like Lester. American Beauty shows that suburbia is far from perfect.
The characters are in colossal conflict with each other, each other seemingly keeping others from finding their own peace.
