Review of American Beauty (1999) by Mike D — 26 Aug 2014
Surprisingly intelligent. Not the most comfortable viewing at times but it still delivers its narrative and themes incredibly. American Beauty isn't merely an examination of a "family breakdown"; it ventures so much more into existential matters of beauty - from dead birds & plastic bags caught on videotape, to a man who, although pathetic, wants nothing but happiness.
.. which is exactly what he gets.
