Review of American Beauty (1999) by Dan I — 16 Sep 2015
However profound this movie may or may not actually be is a debate that I think will continue for a long time now. I think this is the movie that a layman moviegoer looks at and it makes them feel intellectual.
It's not a movie that induces a sense of insincerity, in fact the movie does a really great job of making itself fell genuine and I'd argue that it's the movie that made Kevin Spacey a household name in spite of The Usual Suspects was out 4 years beforehand.
It's totally deserving of it's accolades, but I don't know if it makes as revelatory a statement 16 years later as it did the year it was released.
