Movies with titles that begin with 'American' seem to be quite hit and miss, with movies like American Sniper and American Psycho being acclaimed for many rightful reasons, while movies like American Pie and American Heist are quite forgettable or mediocre at best.
However throughout my few years of watching movies in a much more theoretical way have I seen a movie as compelling and gripping as American Beauty.
