Review of American Beauty (1999) by Frank D — 03 Jan 2016
So much more than what it looks like.
If you're creeped out by the pedo-dad aspect, don't worry. It's handled very well & it's only the beginning of many, many other events in both the main character's life & the lives of the many people around him, including his family members & neighbors.
This is a story of broken ordinary people whose lives may look like suburban "American beauty" to those on the outside, but underneath there's rot at the roots of these roses. As the movie's tag line states "Look deeper".
This movie is funny and dark, yet surprisingly moral. Many excellent messages are directed at the audience by the end, particularly about the lies we tell ourselves in our daily lives & the importance of seeing the ordinary "beauty" in life.
