Review of American Beauty (1999) by Critic M — 15 Apr 2013
This is a great movie. It's very funny but also very smart and dark about it's subject. The subject is the suburbs and the character who leads us through is Lester Burnham played by Kevin Spacey who when we first see him is clinically depressed his life is not what he wants it to be.
He hates his job. His family hates him. But then one day after seeing his daughter's best friend he starts hallucinating about her and then after a hit of pot he gets the idea of not being depressed anymore and starts changing his attitude and then well things start getting interesting but I don't want to get into the other great characters and situations because you have to experience them yourself.
This is a darkly funny movie which is also heartwarming because of the fact that this man finally wants more for himself and how he gets to that point and what happens to him after is the stuff of dramatic irony.
This is one of the best films of 1999 and I think more people need to watch this movie on dvd or blu-ray.
