Review of American Beauty (1999) by Carlos R — 23 Jul 2013
I love American Beauty probably more than any other film in the world. I would say it is beautiful, exciting and profound; the three adjectives at the highest possible level of intensity. From start to finish it is filled with strong, powerful and enigmatic scenes and a lot of very, very dark humor. It satirizes harshly contemporary American society and few films if any can presume to have done this better.
In the acting department, Kevin Spacey devours the film as well as Wes Bentley. Not far behind there were Chris Cooper, Thora Birch, Mena Suvari and Annette Bening, all of them at their very best.
Alan Ball's writing and Sam Mendes' direction are pure perfection in this masterpiece, which is arguably my favorite movie of all time and will always be.
