Review of American Beauty (1999) by Christopher J — 26 Dec 2013
Masterful. With masterful cinematography, it masterfully takes us into masterfully built characters with masterful dialogue and masterful plot.
It's clear American Beauty is trying to ask questions. It's trying to get us to think. It seems no matter how deep you go into this film, there's no hard "moral" or "thought-provoker" here. One line seems to point at one thing, and one character seems to point at another. It's a convoluted jumble; mysterious, and like a bottomless pit.
Maybe that's what they intended. But without lovable characters (albeit detailed and interesting), American Beauty struggles to stay in my mind after the end credits.
