Review of American Beauty (1999) by Simon H — 21 Jun 2014
Brought to you by Sam Mendes, American Beauty is a well written dark comedy which is both funny and clever, and full of surprise twists throughout.
What really keeps the film going are the performances. Both Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening are fantastic in their roles as the unhappy married couple. They have great chemistry together and bring all their scenes to life. Mena Suvari is surprisingly excellent in her role compared to her dull performances in the American Pie series. Chris Cooper also brings a character to life like you don't usually see from him. It would have been nice to have seen more of him, but he makes the most of every scene he is in.
American Beauty also has a wonderful Oscar Nominated Score by Thomas Newman with the familiar theme popping up to represent the oddness of the families. Entertaining from start to finish, American Beauty deserves all the recognition it received.
