Review of American Beauty (1999) by Tyler Y — 09 Sep 2014
American Beauty, as a satire of white suburbia, isn't saying much of anything new or revolutionary; it even sports some troubling undertones (and no, not deliberate ones); but any shortcomings the film has are compensated for by technical brilliance.
The performances are strong nearly all around the board, the score is appropriately minimalist, and the shots are breathtaking. All of these are complimented by a witty (if not wholly verisimilar) script, creating an atmosphere that will convince you that much more is going on here than there really is.
