The question could be asked, what makes American Beauty a great movie? The story is about a man who decides to live his life the way he wants to, which is the kind of man we all hope to be, so immediately we're enthralled with amusement as we witness his pursuit of this dream.
Combined with the performances and artistic presentation, the question can be answered. The reason why American Beauty is a great movie, is because it excels in every category. 10/10.
