Review of American Assassin (2017) by Rick F — 24 Sep 2017
American Assassin introduces the popular Vince Flynn novels to the big screen. The plot differences from the series may bother long time fans, but the casting makes up for it. Michael Keaton nails it as CIA master trainer Stan Hurley.
I always pictured Bruce Willis, but Keaton now owns that character. Dylan O'Brien is protagonist Mitch Rapp, and he fills the role with subdued intensity. For years I had envisioned Taylor Kitsch as Rapp.
Here he is Ghost, an earlier version of Rapp, a former Hurley protege who went rogue, resulting in Hurley's hesitation to put Rapp into the field. The story line is filled with the expected plot twists, and the action doesn't disappoint.
As much as I would have preferred the storyline stayed closer to the novel American Assassin, I can accept the changes made to launch the series of Mitch Rapp adventures. This is a great beginning.
