Review of American Animals (2018) by Dana F — 31 Dec 2018
The only reason I have even heard of this movie is because it was filmed in my hometown of Charlotte. It doesn't boast any big stars and I never even saw a trailer for it. But when I saw that it got good reviews, I put it in my Netflix queue, and I'm sure glad I did.
It's an unusual and interesting story told in an unusual and interesting way. I'm about sick of movies with the word "American" in the title, but in this case, it makes sense within the context of the film - but I won't spoil it for you by telling you why.
The movie is a true story about a group of college kids who decide to steal a collection of rare books from their University library. You'd think it's just another "true crime" heist movie, 'roided up for dramatic effect.
.. but this movie feels more true to life than probably any other true crime movie or TV show I have seen. At times, it's more like a re-enactment (albeit, a really good one) than a movie, and I wasn't surprised to learn that director Bart Layton usually does documentaries - parts of the movie definitely have that documentary vibe.
The story is intercut with real interviews of the real people involved, who sometimes even break the 5th wall (did I just make up this phrase? I believe I may have) and interact with the actors. It's inventive, interesting, and lots of fun.
The film starts out with a light and playful tone and is actually really funny. But as the as the heist approaches and eventually gets underway, the film gradually shifts to a much more tense and serious tone, ending on a somber note that highlights the drastic consequences that the American youth ideal of "being extraordinary" can have.
My only complaint is that it's a little too long and the film takes too much time resolving the story... the last 30 minutes really drag. But otherwise, this is a very enjoyable and well-made film.
Make a point to seek this one out, it's a good watch.
