Review of American Animals (2018) by Matthew D — 21 Jun 2018
American Animals is the best heist film in a decade!
Drawing inspiration from Heat, Reservoir Dogs, and Jackie Brown among others, American Animals is a revelation. Crime thriller with a conscious. It is so self aware of its genre and consequences. American Animals is filled with references to other heist movies, while simultaneously hammers home the consequences of criminal activity. Director Bart Layton made a highly entertaining, hilarious, and thoughtful crime drama that doubles as a documentary of this incredible true story. Blending the actors' recreation of the heist with the real men telling their story works to verify the story while revealing the implications of their choices.
The entire ensemble is well cast and carry American Animals to greatness. Even Peters is the standout as the erratic Warren. Barry Keoghan is thoughtful and reflective as Spencer. Jared Abrahamson is excellent and analytical as Eric. Blake Jenner is brazenly rash and confident as Chas. They all play their respective part beautifully. This is a real crime crew brought to life.
The movie's only fault is its lengthy run time. I found Bart Layton's script to be well written and remorseful in tone. You find humor and solace in how reflective the actual men are about these events. The music is thrilling with various American rock selections ready to captive you.
American Animals should engage any audience and thrill you with a memorable heist story. It's wild premise and interesting shots will astonish you. It could have been trimmed down and given you more time with each character. I found the movie believable, but I wanted a bit more establishment before the heist. American Animals is still a triumph of crime cinema all the same!
