Review of Amélie (2001) by Wes S — 28 Sep 2011
Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) is an odd young girl who keeps to herself mostly, but when she finds a small tin box containing children's toys hidden behind the wall of her bathroom she suddenly has a brilliant idea. She will find the owner of the box, if he is moved by having his things back after so many years she'll become a regular do-gooder. This sets her down a path where she decides to give karma a hand, and unwittingly finds love along the way.
Romantic comedies are usually not my style, but I have to make an exception for this one which has become one of my favorites. Amélie is a quirky and endearing offbeat comedy full of oddball characters and a plot that flows seamlessly. The use of bright colors and the amazing cinematography create a warm and inviting atmosphere, likewise the film's musical score is the perfect style of music for this kind of film. Altogether this is an endearing and tender offbeat romantic comedy that, in my opinion, is an instant classic.
