Review of Amélie (2001) by Ivan M — 03 May 2012
Jean-Pierre Jeunet has made a colourful and cheerful fairytale with Amelie, a film about a young woman who, after living a severely sheltered childhood and remaining almost an innocent child, is prompted to devote her life to making others happy.
The film is very unrealistic (I believe the director had his filming locations swept up and cleaned before shooting), but I'm not complaining, as it would be like complaining that vampires don't exist to insult the story of Dracula.
The whole charm of Amelie is the lovely and care-free version of Paris which the characters inhabit. It's not a perfect film, as it does have quite a few predictable moments, and some attributes which one would normally find in your typical, run-of-the-mill mainstream flick.
Nevertheless, it's great for what it is, and I can't imagine anyone who dislikes it immensely.
