Review of Amelia (2009) by Jared G — 17 Feb 2010
Hilary Swank plays "Amelia" as a good ole tomboy who speaks like Katherine Hepburn (The Philadelphia Story) but has a Julie Andrews (The Sound Of Music) haircut. When she consoles a young boy, you expect her to sing "the hills are alive with the sound of music.
" That's the problem with this film, as a viewer, you are more interested in the hairdos, fashion, and culture (early 20th Century) than you get caught up in the story. Not helping things is that Amelia capitalized on her fame with endorsements.
However, I still enjoyed the independence of this women and I can understand what drove Swank and the effective Indian director Mira Nair, to tell this story. She was a feminist of her times. The affair with Ewan McGregor is not explored so we're confused about the extent of their relationship.
The movie is best entertaining when Amelia is flying, the cinematography is beautiful to look at, and the audience feels the exuberance of her flying accomplishments.
